Our traditional Christmas dinner normally boasts a modge podge of family recipes including asparagus casserole, lima beans and corn, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, Georgie biscuits, and a lot. of. turkey. The onslaught of desserts arrive from our gracious neighbors and have their own home to the right of the casseroles along a beautiful buffet of festive food. And then, there is the last dish…the one that sits between the sides and dessert and can, by its very nature, be either a side dish or dessert. Sweet and savory, sparkly and piping hot, filling and delicious. It’s my mom’s staple every year. It’s hot fruit casserole, and I’m sharing her recipe with you!

Ingredients for base:

  • 1 can peaches
  • 1 can pineapple
  • 1 can pears
  • 1 can dark cherries
  • drain all the fruits
  • 3/4 jar maraschino cherries

Ingredients for sauce:

  • 1/2 cup apple sauce
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Ingredients for crust:

  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar


Drain the fruit and mix it together in casserole dish. Separately, drain the dark cherries and maraschino cherries and top the fruit base with the cherries. Mix the sauce ingredients together and bring everything to a boil. Pour the sauce over the fruit casserole. In a plastic baggie, crush the pecans together with the tablespoons of brown sugar. Sprinkle the mixture over the casserole. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour, and enjoy!
