Happy National Relaxation Day! Admittedly, I was initially unclear as to why this day fell on a Thursday. That said, in conversation with a dear friend this morning, we discussed the importance of taking time to unwind in order to maintain endurance in the midst of a sometimes overly busy life.

Today, I’m sharing with you 4 tips to relaxation. These are easily accessible any time of day and provide a bit more mental bandwidth to focus on what matters most to you in that moment. Each one is a takeaway from a workshop or a dear friend’s advice.

  1. Spend 10 minutes in sunlight. Natural sunlight balances our endorphin and serotonin levels and energizes our mind. Wellness specialists even recommend it for sleep improvement (talk about a win!)
  2. Grab 5 minutes of headspace.Earlier this summer, I began listening to a 5 minute guided meditation before going to bed, something I have never done before. It has afforded me a huge gift: falling asleep fast. Better yet? I’ve stayed asleep, an unexpected treat for me, as I am a very restless sleeper. (My app of choice is Calm).
  3. Grab a diffuser. Adding in essential oils like lavender, lemon or jasmine can support relaxation naturally (any time of day!) If you do not have a diffuser on hand, simply use a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut and mix a few drops for application on your wrists.
  4. And the simplest – breathe. Somehow, we forget to truly breathe. In the day to day, the routine, the long lists – it slips our mind. A deep breath actually sends a message to your brain to calm down in that exact moment of stress or anxiety. If you can count your inhale and exhale, you afford your brain some much needed space.
