My grandmother, Sarah Lanier, forever holds a special place in my heart. Aside from the token grandmother qualities she brought to my life, her outspoken love of all-things-fashion created in me an equally deep appreciation for textiles and colors. Gaga tended towards bold prints, smooth fabrics, and the biggest and best costume jewelry this side of New York City. If she was on her way to a family dinner, one might think she was preparing for a 5 star meal and a Broadway show.
Today, I do my best (though I often fall short) to carry forward her love of fashion. I do that by remembering what she taught me: fashion is not about stuff. It’s about expression. We so often hear “this is in style,” or “that’s really last season.” But what’s truly fashionable, as my grandmother taught me, is the piece that exemplifies you. When you’re true to yourself, you’re always in style!
One facet of fashion I love to use in my personal style: color! True, I’m known for wearing mostly black mostly always, but I add a pop of color or a whimsical pattern to play up bold contrast. Alongside denim jeans or black leggings, below are a few of my favorite colors for bold outfit pairings. What are your favorite personality expressions through your own style?
