The winter months are more commonly associated with mountain trips, but here in the Carolinas it’s time for long strolls on the beach and off-leash runs for Jasper! In the winter months, temperatures stay in the low 60’s, and the beaches empty out…creating ample space to park a chair and enjoy the salt air. If you’re planning a getaway in the next few months, mark your calendar for Sullivan’s Island and consider this your personalized itinerary for a memorable weekend!
Friday | settle and feast.
Arrive in Charleston mid afternoon, and settle into your new “home away from home.” Grab a beach chair and claim your spot by 5:00 p.m. And my dear friend, prepare your eyes for a breathtaking sunset. Charleston is known for its historic sites and fantastic food…and the beach is no different! With a weekend on Sullivan’s Island, you can put the car in the garage and enjoy some world class dining just blocks from your wrap around porch. (Make sure you have a 7:00 p.m. reservation for The Obstinate Daughter!)

Saturday | breathe in, and walk it out.
First rule of island life: don’t set an alarm clock! Wake up as you’d like, and make your way to Cafe Medley for a cup of coffee and a delicious egg and cheese sandwich. Relish a mid-morning stroll along the shoreline, and find your spot for a picnic lunch near the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse. And for the remainder of your day’s planning, practice my husband’s saying: nothing to do and all day to do it.

Sunday| bike for burgers.
Even with a winter breeze, the weather bodes well for a beach cruise on wheels. Rent a beach cruiser and cover the island. Mid morning, make a stop on the end of the island for a tour of Fort Moultrie. Loop through the residential area of Sullivan’s and turn back towards town for award winning burgers at Poe’s – a must for all visitors and residents alike. (And if you’re not ready to leave after lunch…stay an extra day with us, and explore downtown Charleston!)

Cooler temperatures and few tourists make this season ideal for a peaceful “beachy” getaway. Visit the town’s website for fall events and even more getaway ideas! Happy travels, my friend.
